This is the 10th and final installment of a 10 part series spotlighting players that will make a significant leap in the 2015 NFL season. If you haven’t checked out our feature on the Eagles Kiko Alonso, I suggest giving it a read. Each player featured in this series are prime prospects to target in season long formats, as well as early season IDP lineups before their prices rise. Let’s get into it!
For NFL fantasy enthusiasts: Tyrann Mathieu was highly touted out of college before he had some drug issues and missed the entire 2012 season. Before his drug issues at LSU, Mathieu was a turnover machine and a Heisman trophy runner up. Then in his first season in Arizona Mathieu came out and showed scouts what they were missing after he fell to the third round in the draft. When he’s on the field he’s been effective, but he needs to put together a healthy season. Mathieu’s has produced turnovers, hard-nosed hitting, and makes smart plays all over the field. Now, healthy Mathieu is looking to finally breakout and produce for the Cardinals on a high level.
Now let’s take a look at why Tyrann Mathieu’s numbers in his first two seasons with Arizona makes him a prime candidate to breakout. During his rookie year Mathieu posted 67 total tackles, one sack, and two interceptions and forced a fumble. Then, last season he posted 38 tackles, one interception and recovered one fumble after recovering from a torn ACL. Now, after thumb surgery that held him out of three games Mathieu is looking to make it through the entire season healthy. If he can stay healthy this season should be a pro bowl caliber season for Mathieu.
The numbers Mathieu has the chance to produce this season are unlimited with his combination of speed, hard-hitting ability and ball hawking skills. With the new opportunities to play IDP (Individual Defensive Players) fantasy leagues, Mathieu will be a sleeper player, but one that people should keep an eye on. I expect the jump for him to be a significant one if healthy, because when healthy he has the skills to be a top tier safety in the league.
The Cardinals were one of the better defenses in the NFL last season, and will need Mathieu to be a big reason why they continue that this season. I would keep an eye on Mathieu in fantasy league drafts this season and for him to break out and prove that he can be a top tier safety.
